Mystic Creatures: Werewolf Art, Movies And Costumes

The full, white moon marks light and shadow in pine filled woods. A tortured howl pierces the night, shadows take shape, and a werewolf prowls the imagination. Is it a man transmogrified, is it a cursed soul seeking a victim, a seventh son craving human flesh? Werewolves are the stuff of legend and humans have been postulating about the mystical creatures since the legends began.
Mystical creatures such as vampires, werewolves, and griffins have long fascinated humans for their representation of the dark side of the soul. Stories of a man shape shifting into a wolf have been passed down through story telling and written accounts throughout time. Arguments have arisen over whether werewolves are minions of the devil coming straight from hell or angels of God sent to pursue and devour evil. The former argument has been the popular view of these mystical creatures.
Werewolves have inspired werewolf art such as figurines, posters, t-shirts, drawings and paintings. Some replicas and knick-knacks of the mystical creatures have become collectibles. Among the miscellaneous items that werewolf fans create and collect are costumes. Dressing up as a werewolf is a popular choice for Halloween, and costume parties and some costumes even include yellow contact lenses to create that menacing wolfish gaze. Werewolves have also become popular subjects for Japanese anime artists.
Mystical creatures such as werewolves have also been popular topics for the movies. The Harry Potter series has included many mystical creatures including the werewolf. The series to date has included two werewolves names Remus Lupin and Fenir Grayback and one unnamed werewolf.
The first movie about these mystical creatures was a silent short made in 1913 that featured a Navajo woman who transformed herself into a wolf. The first talkie about a werewolf was made in 1932 , however, long considered the werewolf classic is the 1941 film "The Wolf Man" featuring Lon Chaney Jr.
In 1959, at a time when America was falling in love with Rock and Roll and the romance of the teen years, movie makers experimented with the idea of a teenage werewolf. This theme was carried forward into the 80s with "Teen Wolf" starring Michael J. Fox as an adolescent struggling with his werewolf-hood. Comedies with famous comedians like Abbott and Costello and popular Gothic television series like "Dark Shadows" included the mystical creatures.
Mystical creatures like werewolves reflect the human love of fantasy and the fascination with the macabre side of the soul, not to mention the enjoyment being scared witless. Whether in comedy, horror or dark drama, in print or on the big screen, werewolves are as popular as ever. Whenever a tale of mystical creatures is told, the story never prowls far from the werewolf.
