Pocket Dragons: Figurines, Historical Collections, Resin Figure And The Whimsical World Of Pocket Dragons

Real Musgrave, a life-long dragon lover, began to frequently draw the whimsical creatures while he and his wife traveled throughout Europe. Inspired by the sights and possibilities, Musgrave sketched dragons into a pad just small enough to fit into his front pocket, and thus marked the beginning of the Whimsical World of Pocket Dragons.

Pocket Dragons are collectible resin figures produced by Collectible World Studios. They remain unique because Musgrave sculpted each one himself, after first settling on a perfected drawing. Musgrave's dog, Flower, often inspired his drawings and sculptures; he loved to model his dragons after her innocent and whimsical ways. Musgrave's first dragon figurines were made in 1989, and included 27 dragons. The figures are cute and friendly dragons engaged in various lighthearted activities such as riding a train, twirling in a skirt, and even eating pizza. In addition, some Pocket Dragons are dressed as characters such as Cinderella ("Cinder Dragon") and Davy Crockett ("Davy Pocket ").

Three Historical Collections of Pocket Dragons were introduced: The Early Years, The Middle Ages, and The New Millennium. Each collection featured six delightful figurines from a certain time period in the history of Pocket Dragons. The Early Years contained dragons from 1989 to 1994; The Middle Ages, from 1995 to 2000; The New Millennium, from 2001 to 2006. These collections came in display cases with six slots, one for each figure, and short descriptions of the dragons on the inside cover of the case. The Historical Collections sold originally for about $129 each.

The original, individual dragon figurines are the most popular and their prices continue to climb. The Sir Nigel Smythebe-Smoke, one of the first 27 Pocket Dragons, originally sold for $147.50. On eBay this cute figure can now be purchased for over $420. Signed figurines are in demand as well; a signed figurine by Musgrave called Baby Brother, originally $19.50, can now be purchased for $174.99 on eBay.

Other popular online stores that sell Pocket Dragons include Ashley Collectibles and the Whimsical World of Pocket Dragons website. However, since Musgrave retired in 2006, the overwhelming majority of the figures have also retired and will not be produced anymore. This fact helps account for the rising prices of the dragons, as they are no longer as readily available.

Throughout the course of his career, Musgrave produced upwards of 200 darling dragons, gargoyles, and wizards. Although Real Musgrave no longer sculpts new Pocket Dragon figurines, the sculpted creatures remain popular among customers thanks to their fantastical and unique designs.
