The legend of the Chinese dragon dates back to the first emperor Hsi who was said to have a dragon's tail. Believed to have infinite wisdom and power, Chinese dragons symbolized the emperors themselves, who ruled the land with a balance of justice and compassion. Likewise, the palace of the emperors were adorned in Chinese dragon figurines, from the dragon bed which the emperor slept in to the Chinese dragon throne that he ruled from.

A Chinese dragon is composed of nine separate parts, hailing from a diverse species of animals. The head of a the dragon is in the likeness of a camel, while its eyes are taken from the rabbit. The scales of the dragon represent the Carp fish with 117 in total, 81 which are yang (good), and 36 with the yin, allowing for a healthy balance of both good and bad. The dragon's paws are of a tiger, while its talons are derived from an eagle. Finally the ears of the dragon are from a bull, the belly of a clam, and the neck of a snake.

Though the Chinese dragon is composed of a myriad of animals, a symbol of oneness and unity, there are four separate types of dragons: the Celestial Dragon who protects the palace of the Gods, the Earth Dragon who controls the rivers and all water on Earth, the Spiritual Dragon who commands the winds and the rains, and the Underworld Dragon who protects the jewels buried beneath the Earth. When examining Chinese Dragon collectibles, figurines and artwork, it is important to make the distinction between the type of dragon which is portrayed.
